While 26 US states gear up to enforce ‘trigger laws’, which will automatically see abortion become illegal, Caroline Hickson, the Regional Director of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) in Belgium, spoke to EURACTIV about the devastating results and the status of women’s reproductive and health rights in Europe. Wade, a decision that ruled in favour of the Constitution of the US protecting a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion, was first decided by the US Supreme Court in 1973 but was overturned on 24 June 2022.
As the US Supreme Court rolled back reproductive rights for women across the country in a decision that shocked the world, the fallout has sparked reactions in Europe, including protests, calls for more reproductive freedom, and even enshrining the right to abortion in constitutions.
